The Montana Downs racecourse at Great Falls is situated at Montana Expo Park, with racing being held in late July and early August. The racing is held in conjunction with the State Fair, and racing comprises both thoroughbred and quarter-horse races. The inaugural meeting at Montana Downs was on 5th August 1946 on a 4 furlong oval dirt track with 125 metre home straight. Today the track also has additional 5 furlong and 7 furlong chutes.  The racecourse has excellent facilities, with an upper and lower grandstand available for the comfort of punters, and a wide range of pari-mutual betting available. Its principal event is the Charles M Russell Futurity. After the 2010 programme had been completed on 1st August 2010 rumours abounded that the track was due for closure, and racing did lapse in 2011 and 2012, but it came back on 20th July 2013 and by 2019 it was back to offering 5 days of racing in late July.
